China - a source, destination, and transit country of sex trafficking

China is the place of the booming sex trade. Most cases come from trafficking and selling young women and girls to marry. Decades of the one-child policy and Chinese preference for boys have led to an overpopulation of men in China. The lack of Chinese women has resulted in two different results. The first consequence is the increase in forced marriages. Chinese men paid thousands of dollars to criminals to buy women. The rise of brothels is the second result. This result caused that China has about 4 million to 6 million sex workers. Some women from the Philippines, Mongolia, and other countries came to China to find work but they were forced to prostitute when they arrived.

In Chinese history, selling and buying women for marriage has always been a serious cultural problem. In 2009, the ratio between men and women was 119.45 to 100. This unbalanced sex ratio led to many unmarried poor people in a rural place in China were unable to marry or pay for the wedding costs. To address this problem, many poor males will spend their all the money to buy a woman from outside to become a forced marriage. In most rural areas of China, marriage is considered important for the production of male heirs and the continuation of male lineage. For single males who can't achieve this goal, buying women is the only way for these poor men in rural places. So, when the police come to villages to investigate forced marriage, villagers would protect buyers from not being found. buy a woman to be their wife is the right thing to these poor men. They think that it not only helps to promote the local economy but also helps to solve marital problems.

There were 10,000 women and children are sold each year in China, mainly in southwestern of China. There are not only Chinese women being sold, but also foreign women from Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar and other Southeast Asian. Some victims migrate to China for a better life, criminals promised them some high-paying jobs, but the fact is sold them to forced marriages.
